June 2005
A trip to the Farne Islands of the Northumberland coast, more time at the Hills & Holes NNR and a the first image from my small mammals project.

Kittiwake, Farne Islands

The Farne Islands is a fantastic place to meet and greet wildlife. It is used on programmes such as Spring Watch because of its ease of access to wildlife. I used my trip to the Farnes to get as close as I could to some of the seabirds present.

Kittiwakes close up have striking colours and it took me a good half hour to get this shot of a calling bird.

Arctic Tern , Farne Islands

The Farne Islands are renowned for the mobbing you receive of the ever vigilant terns. The arctic tern can be particularly bold and vicious and they have learnt to nip you even through the holes of a baseball hat.

However this fearlessness leads to some prime photographic opportunities as the birds drop down on you from above. This was taken with a 24mm lens and the bird was only a few inches from the lens.

Pasque flower, Hills & Holes NNR

Towards the end of the flowering season for the pasque flower I was able to visit the Hills & Holes NNR in Lincolnshire. The seed heads on many of the plants had already formed and there were few flowering specimens left. I found this one flower and decided to position the sun directly behind a seed head to get the best backlighting possible. 24mm lens

Bank Vole, Oxfordshire

My latest project has been to try and get good quality images of small rodents. This is the first good image of the series and I picked it because of the way the vole is obscured by the grass similar to the way it may appear if you were at a voles eye view. 50mm lens with 12mm extension tube.
