July 2005
My annual pilgrimage to the Lake District for a break and more wildlife images.

Silver Birch, Cumbria

One evening I set out looking for images. I spotted these birches and made several exposures of varying compositions until I was happy with this composition. I liked the way the strong sunlight was back-lighting the leaves of the trees but I wanted to emphasise this so I had to search out a dark background to get the contrast I was after.

Beck, Cumbria

I wanted to take a classic moving water scene so I used the small beck running beside the lodge. I had waited for an overcast day as I wanted to simplify the exposure of the scene and increase the shutter speed to several seconds. I was forced to use a polarise as well to get the length of exposure however this also cut out unwanted reflections and emphasised the green of the mossy rocks. 24mm

The line of rocks through the scene provides for strong lead in line for the eye to follow.

Marbelled White, Oxfordshire

I have been after a picture of a backlit marbelled white in long grass for a long time. When I finally got the opportunity to try again I was in Oxfordshire. This individual was very cooperative and allowed me to part the grass to compose the shot I was after. 135mm + 31mm ext

Bee, Lincolnshire

I was photographing these beautiful backlit flower spikes (woundwort family?) when a bee arrived in the scene. My first thought was to wait for it to move on when I suddenly saw the potential in the picture. I quickly took two frames before it dissapeared. I waited an hour until the sun set but no more bees returned. This was the best image I achieved. 300mm + extension tubes
