"Young Impala suckling, February 2008"

This was my first trip on a proper African safari and I had seen numerous images of African wildlife before I left. The question all photographers now have to face is how to produce something new and different? After taking a number of impala pictures including standard portraits I was on the lookout for something a little different.

We were in a vehicle in Pilanesberg National Park whilst completing research with an Earthwatch Institute volunteer team when we spotted a group of female impala with their young. I was able to isolate this young impala suckling from her mother and felt that the three dark areas in the original image were the strongest points of the image. By converting to black and white I was able to emphasise this to produce this image.
