February 2005
During January and February I was fortunate to visit a number of countries in Central and Eastern Europe as part of my work. I visited Slovakia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Lithuania and Estonia. Seperate galleries of these images can be found in the Europe section of this website.

Accordianist, Hungary

We spent a long time in Budapest trying to find a restaurant the had been recommended to us. When we finally found it we discovered it was in the cellars of an old building. As well as excellent food they also had live music, and fortunately I had brought my camera with me. When this gentleman came to our table I indicated that I wanted to take some pictures which he obligingly nodded to. I used rear curtain flash and a slow shutter speed to obtain this slightly blurred effect with a 50mm lens.

Aleksander Nevsky Church, Sofia

I didn’t have long in Sofia and as the weather was overcast I knew my best opportunity for images would be at dusk when building lights came on. Tony had obligingly waited with me in the freezing cold and snow for the lights to be put onto the church so we were wandering around in the area. Suddenly we noticed the light had come on but rather than approach for the close shot I started with this distant image.

I like the lead in lines of the snow covered flower bed in this image and the contrast between the cold purple, blue and the bright yellow of the floodlights on the church. For me the footprints provide an additional pleasing detail.

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Tallinn

Some of the best images I took came from a long weekend that I added onto my time in Tallinn, Estonia. I had risen at dawn to get some sunrise images over the city but the warm orange light on the cathedral really caught my eye. I used my 24mm lens to get this perspective from the narrow street below.

Snow on wall, Tallinn

A snowfall one evening had left the town shroud in another layer of snow, and a strong wind had blown the snow all over this wall in one of the backstreets. This image is unusual as it is not the sort of image I would normally photograph but I am pleased to have done so. The detail of the old poster stuck on the door makes this image for me.
