PICTURE's OF THE MONTH: FEBRUARY

January February 2003

LUGWORM
During the low spring tides I went down across the beach and found a magnificent collection of lugworm piles spread across the beach. I was drwn to their intricate shape and decided to photograph them exactly as I saw them - from above - to emphasise their random spiral structure. I like this paticular image because of its abstract nature, it almost appears like a pile of string. Tripod, 28-135mm lens at long end with 12mm and 31mm extension tubes.

BEACH STILL LIFE
The afternoon light broke through low in the sky and highlighted these items of natures "rubbish" strewn across the beach. I paticularly liked the way the low angled light picks up the texture of the objects and emphasises there shapes and I feel that the chunk of kelp root acts as a focal point for the eye in the frame. Tripod and 28-135mm zoom

FLOW COUNTRY
I was amazed by this image when I received it back from the processing labs. I saw the picture I wanted from the top of Ben Loyal but from previous experience I knew it was difficult to capture the drama of shafts of sunlight penetrating through clouds but I also had seen very succesful images so I knew it could be done. I took the image on the off chance that it would come out and I used a grey graduated filter to hold back the exposure of the clouds and the sun beams and I took my exposure from the heather in sunlight as this was my area of interest in the final picture. I also bracketed a half stop either way and I was amazed when I got a succesful result. 28-135mm zoom and tripod

BEACH REFLECTIONS
I took this image on a whim when I happened to look down at my feet and see that the wet sand covered enough area on the beach to be reflecting the colours that were starting to show in the sky. I took several photos like this but ones that were taken a few minutes after this one didnt have the same reflectance and were much darker. I think this is because the sun was sinking rapidly and the clouds were moving so the image just wouldnt come together after the initial moment had passed. Tripod, 28-135mm zoom
