April 2005
This month a bit more emphasis on natural history. April always marks the entry to the BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition.

Artist & Snakeshead Fritillary, Magdelan College

The flood meadows of Magdelan college Oxford play host to a magnificent display of Snakeshead Fritillary flowers every spring. I went down specifically to get a slightly different viewpoint of the beautiful flowers.

Caroline was sketching the beautiful shapes of the flower heads so I decided to use her as a point of interest in the image. The extreme perspective was gained through using my 24mm lens however I feel it has left Caroline too indistinct beneath the tree.

Frozen Cowslip, Oxfordshire

This frozen cowslip was photographed in a Wildlife Trust reserve near Oxford. I had gone out early to look for rabbits however the late frost created a number of beautiful shots which I felt I had to capture.

For this image I lay in the frozen grass and used my 300mm lens too shoot back into the light. which created this rimlit flower.

Goose, Oxfordshire

A number of geese were bathing along the side of the river at Port Meadow so I set up and waited quietly for them to paddle into an appropriate position. The hardest thing was trying not to get cluttered geese in the background.

Maryport, Lake District

This sunset was shot on a long weekend trip up to the lake district. It was late in the day and I wanted to get the ripples of the sand in the foreground of the shot.

I like the way the light just touches the tops of these small sand dunes.
