TRAVEL VIEWPOINTS

Wherever you travel to in the world there is bound to be some viewpoint that you find or locals direct you to. Often the first time you come across the viewpoint you are so taken by the view that you have to snap a shot.

I often find a number of viewpoints when I travel and of course I grab a shot.

In Tallinn I found a fantastic viewpoint up on the Toompea looking east out over the city. When I initially found it on the map my instant thought was "sunrise"! The first time I visited it was grey and overcast and while I took one quick snap I knew it was worthless and purely taken to satisfy my trigger happy fingers.

However I returned several times within the three days I was there and I took a variety of images as a result.

This was the sort of image I had in mind when I first saw the viewpoint on the map. This image was taken with a graduated filter and shows the first light of day coming up over the city.

The top image shows the viewpoint itself with a couple of tourists at the spot taking images of the city in the early morning and the image directly above was taken at sunset with the pink glow of the sun lighting up the sky.

This image was taken shortly after the image above. This shows the effect that can be gained by altering lens that is being used an including different subject matter in the frame. But all from the same viewpoint.

Again this image has a different atmosphere to the similar image two rows above.

This image is the first image that I took when I originally arrived at the scene. Whilst the viewpoint does provide a great view over the city this image lacks something to boost it beyond a pure snapshot.

Whilst I think it is important to identify a succesful viewpoint and utilise it at different times of the day to get good shots you must never forget that there are also other viewpoints around such as this one just around the corner.

The sun was setting and the warm light was beautiful however from the previous viewpoint featured above the shadow of the city prevented me from getting any images. By walking a few hundred yards to the alternative viewpoint (scouted out earlier in the day) I was able to get this image of the city walls of Tallinn.
