GLOBAL VISION INTERNATIONAL:
PRE-DEPARTURE

Well this was definitely the hardest part. What to pack to go and spend 10 weeks in the rainforest? Thankfully Cai and I had our trusty GVI kit lists so we made sure we had all the listed items. My brother, Michael, had fortunately spent some time in the rainforest so we were prepared for the worst. For a comprehensive list of what I took, used a lot and really didn’t need click here. The rainforest is a hot damp place so stuff tends to rot fairly fast so we made sure we had old clothes for the forest as well as plenty of insect repellent, lots of camera film and spare batteries.

We also visited GVI in London for a pre-departure briefing, which gave us a chance to meet the team leaders and some of the old volunteers. We spent quite some time discussing a lot of our kit issues, anti-malarial drugs, dangerous creatures and cool stuff that they had seen on previous expeditions. Whilst it isn’t always possible to meet a leader at one of these events I do suggest that you attend a pre-departure briefing. Either before signing up as it helps make your mind up about project lifestyle or once you have signed up as there is always the chance to ask difficult questions and get an honest response.

I ended up carrying a large pack weighing 24kg and a smaller pack weighing 10kg which together with my body weight of 76kg put me at 110kg which was over the limit allowed for the flight into the amazon however I managed to offload some kit in Quito
