The following images were taken on
my trip to the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust at Slimbridge. One source
of pressure for flamingo populations in the past was bird collectors
taking birds, young or eggs from the wild. Slimbridge no longer
gather wild birds and instead manage to provide captivity reared
birds for other collections. Slimbridge is a worldleader in breeding
flamingos however they have only successfully bred Caribbean, Chilean
and Greater flamingos in captivity. Flamingos in captivity are kept
in different conditions to what they would experience in the wild.
Therefore it is necessary to provide housing and heating for them.
